Re: June 2017 - charliebir's Caramelised Onion Pillau
Has anyone tried making this with less oil yet?
I'll try doing so later on tonight, but as I've been on a quest to find a healthy oil (using coconut oil now), I suspect it may affect the outcome.
Cheers.
P.S I also didn't know that devils dung added colour. I'll have to give that a go as well.

I don't think adding hing/asafoetida/Devil's Dung does add colour, does it (snoopy mentioned the same thing, some time ago)?

The Indian grocers I go to say they use asafoetida to add colour.

Hi Harry.
The oil is there only to caramelise the onion.
For low oil, I would start with your required amount of onion and slowly add oil until you have the minimum amount required to brown the onion. Might be possible with no oil, but I haven't tried yet.
Having said that I often make a pilau without the onion or any oil using the basic recipe.
Just leave them out. Pop the panch phoran in a dry pan then add the other ingredients, stirring to heat up !

This is the second time I've cooked this this month, I forgot to take a photo last time. Simple, straightforward and delicious.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

yum!
I've made this rice four times in the last month
The panch poran is an amazing spice mix
Up til recently I'd been mainly using "pillau" rice spices
This is such a nice change

I haven't tried any different rices yet, only boiled Basmati or fried rice, so I'm definately going to try this one.
Thanks for the recipe
