Re: "An Introduction to BIR Curries (V1.0)" Now Released!
Well done guys, Excellent work,
Re: "An Introduction to BIR Curries (V1.0)" Now Released!
I worked through a few recipes from the book over the Christmas break. . . Very pleased with the results from all of them :-)
Experimented with a 50:50 mix of pre cooked chicken and paneer for a madras; boy that was good!
A few ideas came to mind while cooking. . .
1) Could all the recipes say start on the odd numbered pages. . . So when the book is open in landscape you get the picture of the dish at the top and the recipe below. This would make it nice and consistent and allow a few blank pages for 'Notes:' to be added.
2) Rather than jump straight into the recipe how about a sentence or two describing the dish, it's key flavours, character etc.
3) As a given step in the method involves many different ingredients for my recipes I put extra line breaks in the list of ingredients breaking the list into 'blocks'; each block relates to a given step in the method. This saves me endlessly referring back to the recipe to see whether the garam masala (or whatever) goes in this step or the next one. . .
Just a thought.
Cheers
Spike

Had this a little while now and very pleased with the range and quality of dishes. Made a double batch of onion bhajis this weekend and froze half for another time.

Hi Matt. Thanks for the feedback. At the moment we are working on v1.1 of the ebook, which includes some minor corrections, simplifications and improvements.
Alongside that we are reworking it so we can publish on Amazon for the Kindle format, which is more work than you might realise!
As for another ebook, nothing in plan at the moment, but who knows, maybe a Chefs Specials edition at some point!?

Just to add that V1.1 also includes some of the improvements suggested by several members above, so thanks for those and please keep them coming (as well as pointing out any errors)....
We would also welcome any other suggestions on the sensibility of producing another volume and suggestions on what it might contain?

Re: "An Introduction to BIR Curries (V1.0)" Now Released!
Just to confirm that Version 1.1 of the e-book has now been released. Changes are largely cosmetic and include some of the suggestions made by those who have obtained Version 1.0 of the e-book (so thanks for those suggestions). The most significant changes are:
Alchy is now finalising a kindle (mobi) version so that we can also promote and distribute the e-book on Amazon (and such like).
If you haven't already donated to charity to obtain a copy, please consider doing so and please recommend to your friends and family that they also do so
- Corrected identified errors and spelling mistakes (we have now spelt chukitinabukit's name correctly - after several, futile, attempts!)
- Changed "rounded" and "heaped" spoon measures to "level" (and adjusted the quantity of measures required accordingly)
- Changed to "TBSP" (for tablespoon) and "tsp" (for teaspoon) measures to minimise the risk of confusing "tbsp" and "tsp"
- Included a statement on portion sizes of main dish recipes
- Added a brief description of all main dishes and side dishes and accompaniments
- Added additional advice on the storage of powdered and whole spices
- Added a table (as an appendix) of all the ingredients required to make all of the recipes in the e-book (i.e. a "shopping list")
- Added hyperlinks to all items in the index

Good news, and thank you Alchy for doing the most of the hard work.
Just one question... How can those of us who have donated for v1.0 get hold of v1.1?

Possibly another contribution of a quid or so, with 1st time buyers paying full price plus, for additional info?
Difficult one this. I don't think you can please everyone.
Maybe vol1.0 free to existing purchasers with new buyers paying an additional 50p?
Glad it's not my decision to make.

This may work... use your compiled list of emails of ebook 1.0 owners, email them a link to the v1.1 ebook, suggesting a non-mandatory additional donation of £1-2, requesting that if they donate, they email. I really don't think you should be pushy about donations, as 1.1 is mainly corrections and minor improvements.

Re: "An Introduction to BIR Curries (V1.0)" Now Released!
What about making it free to those who already have v1.0 if they 'introduce a friend' who orders a copy?
Re: "An Introduction to BIR Curries (V1.0)" Now Released!
Honestly, as long as no additional recipes are in it then it should be free for previous donators, IMHO. After all, it also contains corrections, right? The edition you describe does not add enough "value" to warrant an additional donation/payment (apart from the fact that it's always good to donate, of course).
To successfully raise more money you'd need to make a Vol. 2. It wouldn't need all the basics and so on just some more recipes that aren't in the first one, yet.
That's just my 2 cents and my opinion - which might not be very popular, I suppose...
