Meet up at Hilal, Timperley

Post by Alchemist »

Myself, British Indian, rshome123 and jerrym met up for a curry this evening, at Hilal Restaurant, Timperley, Altrincham.

Great night, with some lovely food and lots of good conversation. Always great to meet other curry nuts in the flesh! I'm sure we'll be doing it again in the future.

Here's a pic, clockwise from bottom left you have jerrym, rshome123 (almost!), British Indian and me.

Yes, it was great to meet you all and a big thanks to rsholme123 for recommending and arranging to eat at The Hilal. The food was delicious. See you again next year.... :cool2:

Sorry CA, we were too busy talking and eating for food photography. Your own recipes stand up very well to any restaurant I've visited, you'll be glad to know :):

Must be something about BIR that attracts a certain demographic! I can't get my kids interested in cooking it, perhaps they've been put off by the scene of devastation in the kitchen after I've had a BIR session!

Sorry CA, didn't think to photograph the food. Just to get you drooling we had between us all: vindaloo, madras, jalfrezi and one of the specials South Indian garlic chicken. Accompanied by pilau rice and and garlic naans. They too, we're excellent. All of the dishes were faultless, it really was very enjoyable indeed. I will return to this restaurant and recommend anyone near it to give it a go.

One thing I did notice and was very surprised by, the Madras and vindaloo were not hot at all. Certainly not like I would expect them to be, but gorgeous all the same.

Sorry to go off topic, but I also visited my beloved "Shere Khan" in Manchester's curry mile and was not too impressed this time around  so, good to see places like Hilal still staying true to their recipes and not trying to cut corners for extra profit/making things easier.

BI

sounds like a fun evening and an interesting menu choice.
Were the garlic 'nanas imported or locally grown?

Sounds like you had fun :):

Also nice to put faces to names, suddenly I don't feel too old for this place
They've been cooking on Blue Peter, now they're sampling the dishes,
I don't normally like tomatoes John but this is delicious.

Did you manage to get any tips from the staff? Did they realise they were serving a bunch of BIR experts?

They saw us flicking through a few curry photos on my iPad, so probably got the feeling we were well into our curries. No tips given, but as we were all experts then possibly no need

The restaurant have been open since 1969, and I can vouch that their Madras hasn't changed at all.

Nothing personal chaps, but us Cockneys have heard that a Yorkshireman is like a Scotsman, but with the generosity squeezed out of him.:

Hear all, see all, say nowt,
eat all, drink all, pay nowt,
and if they do owt fer nowt, thee do the same. :ohmg:

As my Yorkshire shooting companions like to say.

Does that sound familiar?

I suppose everyone has their 'taste', but I personally wouldn't rate the Hilal at all. It isn't too far away from me - I could walk to it. I went back in the early '70s and was completely underimpressed by the food, the service and the attitude of the waiters. People were queueing to get in too - which shows to me that the average brit has no idea when it comes to the taste of a good curry.
In the mid 70s, I then went to work in the Middle East - Dubai based and travelled all over. I then got to taste some fantastic Indian, Pakistani, Arabic foods - which made me realise even more how poor the Hilal was back home. ( try Ravi, Kwality, Khyber - in Dubai if you want to taste food as it shhould be)
On my return back to the UK, some 35 years after the Hilal opened, I tried it again - suffice to say, I won't be trying it again - ever.

There are far better curry houses in the local area serving tasty 'Indian' food - like 7 Spices, Cheadle, Swadesh - several locations, Bowdon being one, Mughli - Rusholme, Mughli bar & kitchen - Knutsford.

I also made the mistake of trying the Dilli in Altrincham a few weeks ago - absolute rubbish - & expensive rubbish at that. It closed down the following week. When the Dilli 1st opened, it was brilliant - but over the next 10 years slowly went downhill. Why do they never learn to keep the standards high?
