Made a batch of this yesterday and cooked a few curries. I had been experimenting with bases largely based on the Glasgow base.

I stated a couple of years ago that I was finished with experimenting after “re-finding” this recipe as this is the best base around, and once again I find I have come full circle. I will probably go astray again, but felt I must re-iterate that this produces fantastic curries from Korma right through to Vindaloo and beyond.

As jimjibe stated it smells lovely and tastes pretty good too as far as base gravies go. It is almost edible as-is.

What mix powder are you using BI, either of CA's or your own ?

CA mix powder 1 and occasionally Litllechillies powder.

No probs. I used to use Julian’s original mix powder when in business. All 3 give great results in my opinion.

I made this curry base this afternoon to use in tonights dinner and also because I am making a curry for friends next weekend.

I used it tonight in a Pathia with pleasing results and will definitely make it again.

Is there any bitterness in this gravy what so ever?
I need to succeed just for once because at the moment i am close to give up my dream to create curries :(

This is still my go-to Base Gravy recipe and is always reliable. Yet to try your updated recipe with potatoes however.

Good to see that this old favourite is still getting the respect it deserves. :thumbup:

Following my return to BIR cooking i will be using this base as it became my default back then. What i hope to experiment with is "Spiced Oil" and maybe some different additions at the curry cooking stage......maybe this is where the elusive last 5/10% is, who knows?

Making up a new batch of this now. Added a few dried birds eyes to the mix, and about 200g of baby potatoes to see how it fairs.

What's your thinking behind changing the recipe (at least in the first instance), period? They are pretty significant changes which are likely to have a pretty significant effect.

Just made this sauce for yesterday's curries.

I think it was really really good, a bit more character compared to the one I've been using previously (Curry Guy).

My kids complained the butter chicken was too hot (spicy) and since the only variable was the base sauce, I guess yeah, spicier but I loved it and think the coriander stalks really set it off.

It cooked down really well with little, to no spluttering, which is always nice.

Definitely a keeper!
