served with fragrant rice, frying pan naan and tarka dal (this was very very good).

Overall I know it looks a bit non descript and messy, but it tastes good! I use finely chopped spinach (and maybe a touch more than the recipe states) and it incorporated itself throughout the sauce rather than having 'patches' of spinach'.

I will definitley do this again, garlic, chili, chicken and spinach in combination can only be a winner.

A tip from a chef i speak to when using spinach in a dish add the pre-cooked spinach to the plate/dish/bowl first then add curry on top then just mix in, that will give you your desired spinach in clumps style, if using spinach leaf not pureed.

Good job, Rik 8-)

It looks very dark (maybe the lighting?). Which curry base and spice mix did you use? Did you make any deviations from the recipe (aside from more spinach)?

It was quite dark, due to the spinach puree, but the lighting is making it look a bit darker than it really was. Having said that I googled up Chicken saagwalla and some of the pics are of quite a dark dish.

Used your base and spice mix two.

Deviations, well yes, no fresh coriander as we just don't have it over here (I have seen a jar of coriander paste here though) and used a whole fresh green chili very finely chopped rather than a frozen block of green chili (I don't have any frozen), also butter ghee rather than oil. Oh and fresh chicken added with the tomato, other than that all spices as per recipe, methi, curry leaves etc.

I will try again with frozen leaf spinach and precook separately as suggested by Uncle Frank above. Maybe with a big squeeze of lemon at the end too.

Good effort Rik! I tried this in the week but my SD card adapter snapped in my camera. Will post results when I find some way of getting the photos off!

Made this tonight as per the recipe, minus the curry leaves & reducing the garlic to four cloves. I have to report, that sadly, Mrs. pauly wasn't impressed.

I think for our tastes, I would change the method, reducing the onion to perhaps a tablespoon of finely diced onions, or even pre-cooked, & frying the garlic at the start. Adding the garlic with the ginger/garlic paste didn't let it fry off, & it lacked the lovely roasted garlic flavour that we like.

The spinach was a nice addition, I added two frozen blocks cooked in the microwave.

I've been warned it could be a windy night

Thanks for reporting back Pauly. Some useful advice that I will consider when making this. I no longer use the mrs as a guinea pig, as she does not appreciate anything but the best!

How can it be useful advice when the correct amount of garlic wasn't used and the curry leaves left out.

unclefrank does raise a point : Are we supposed to be replicating the recipe as far as possible or just doing our take on them ?

Ideally people should stick to the recipe, although they may not be able to get all the ingredients and so leave these out or choose to reduce the amount a chilli used if they don't like hot curries.

Haha you all doubted me but Ive managed to recover the photos! You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find a mini (not micro) SD card adapter these days.

Anyway, I tried this curry last week and was really pleased with the results. I made it with my base and Basaar spice mix, I also added slightly more spinach than in the original recipe. The garlic flavors in this dish really come through and I loved the addition of curry leaves. I've never cooked with curry leaves before and when I tasted it, it instantly reminded me of a distinctive BIR that I had many years ago. Would I cook it again? Almost certainly. Would I change anything? I would perhaps add 1tsp of madras curry powder as I do like my currys to be intense and spinach can tend to absorb/overpower the flavors. Thanks UF for the recipe!
