not meaning to sound thick - but I have never heard of chaat masala - and I probably have just about most spices on the planet - assuming this is a powder. What is it similar to - taste wise and is it readily available? I want to try this so will need to go spice stalking!

I don't think it's similar to anything Alison it has a very unique taste! It should be readily available at any Asian shop. I got a box of "Shah" brand for less than a quid.

Could you clarify the quantity of base gravy? I used 1.25 ladles where my ladle is 90ml giving about 110ml and it seemed about right for me at any rate.

Tbh, I don't personally worry about how many ml are in my ladle. Sometimes I've made it wetter than other times. Some restaurants have this dish very dry, some have it pretty saucey. Sometimes I mix it up. I've tried modifying this recipe too using red chilli or green chilli condiments that you get from indian grocers if I fancy something a little different (again having been inspired by some of the different alloo chaats I've had at restaurants)

Too much chat, not enough chaat.
Good to see that some members have tried this but, to date, only six have admitted it:
steveparadox (obviously)
ScotchBonnet (try before you buy)
Chickenboona (nice picture, loads of coriander)
andrw (a very nice picture - you can almost taste the sauce sticking to the potatoes and you can clearly see the cucumber pieces)
TikkaTom (lovely in-pan shot)
Mr.Everready (no photo but an exuberant "Yahoo" emoticon)
I bought 1Kg ASDA "British baby potatoes" for 89p and might just do the whole darn lot this weekend. They look so good I'll probably just wash them rather than peel. The store's website recommends boiling for 20 minutes but this is, IMHO, excessive and 12-15 minutes (depending upon chunk size) is about right especially if you are then going on to use them in a dish such as this,

Re: November 2016 - steveparadox's Aloo Chaat
Here you go SB
I made a double portion last night, basically doubled up everything, went a bit less with the tomato and a bit more with the whole chillies. I also used the Glasgow 2k base.
As I said last night, I thought this was superb. Probalbly the nicest dish I've made. I'll be using the same recipe with chicken for my next curry.

Nice Eveready, looks great! most restaurants use lemon but I do like to use like myself as I find the bitterness enhances the whole complex chaat infused flavour. like you, I have tried with more Chilli which works well if you fancy it spicier.

I made this today, and will properly taste it later with a clean palette. It's looking promising.

Re: November 2016 - steveparadox's Aloo Chaat
No Puri, Steve. Didn't fancy it. I make the recipe exactly as printed, assuming level teaspoons as the measurements.
Here's the Aloo Chaat I just ate as a side dish alongside a Lamb Madras, Pilau, and Naan. When I initially tasted it straight out of the frying pan, it was a little bit disappointing, but that is quite common for me no matter what the curry - taste buds tainted because of cooking. So, I let it sit for a few hours, and the taste experience was certainly better.
I'm not usually a big fan of potato based curries and side dishes, and it surprises me just how many people say things like "Bombay Aloo is my favourite Indian dish". So, with that having been said, please bear that in mind when reading this.
I was impressed with the potato, cucumber and chaat masala combination. The soft potato, crunchy but moist cucumber and the tangy Chaat Masala left a pleasant after taste in the mouth after swallowing, with the slight hum of the fresh chilli poking through. I used squeezy lime juice from a bottle, a flavour which I'm sure would have been improved if using fresh lime instead. I must say, though, that this is one of the better potato based dishes I have tasted.
The next time I'm serving curry for friends, I will be making this again as a side dish that is bound to please most and complement other curries nicely. You never know, I might even be converted into a potato addict.

Re: November 2016 - steveparadox's Aloo Chaat
I too made this tonight and was a little disappointed whilst tasting during cooking, but I had previously made westys madras, and som biryani rice so my taste buds were overloaded. Eating it some 4 hours later and it was great! I am a big fan of chaat masal powder especially on tikka etc
Well done!

I think there was a piece in there somewhere. Potato modesty wasn't intentional. I just grabbed a spoonful to serve.
