Great stuff, Chris. Great innovation with the suction heads!

I've considered getting a vacuum sealer and really must do so sometime. The only think that wasn't quite clear to me is how the tape allows the vacuum to be created and then, thereafter, retains the vacuum?

It pulls the air out of the jar under the tape and because its under vacuum it sucks the tape down to seal.

HA HA!

Chris - my inlaws are of the 'Don't-throw-anything-out' school and what they do is palm it off onto us and tell us if we dont need it, to take it to the tip - conveniently saving them a trip of course - their house is like Aunty Wainrights.

Anyhow - they gave us a vacuum sealer about a year ago, which has laid dormant, hibernating in the storage berth here on the boat, as the lecky to run it costs petrol.

Now I have a reason to use it, LOL

Thanks m8!! Incredibly inventive

Great video Chris, I probably won't make much use of it, but thought I'd also alert for possible alternatives for those who can't/don't want afford one of these machines, the same can be achieved using a pressure cooker.

Look for videos on "pressure canning" on youtube

Going to have a go at making one of these for my sealer, cheers for the video Chris.

...p.s.... I believe you mean electrical insulation tape, not masking tape as you say in the video :?

;)

Can you seal wine bottles this way?
"Don't burn the spices" is the most dangerous truism of all - because it's incomplete. It should be "Don't burn the spices but do cook them!"
You'll never make BIR if you're too cautious frying your spices.....

I can't see why anyone would want to vac seal wine. :?

That said, I have seen people use vac seal bags to seal the wine and then freeze it for future use.

If the bottle is open, it needs to be finished imo :pepsi:

Watched this video, ingenious setup! The thing that gets me is the fact that everything you buy now has to be put in the fridge, used within 2 weeks etc, years ago your jam, tomato sauce etc was put in the cupboard. It never affected us! Did it :? :? :?

Excellent idea, perfect for me as I always throw those Patak's jars away when they're still at least half full. Since those bl**dy jars are very expensive in Germany getting a vacuum sealer will pay itself off in no time. Cheers Chris!

I thought this was a brilliant idea too, but as I already had a cheap hand-held bag sealer, I thought I'd see if that would work also, and tried it with a piece of tubing from some welding gear.
It works a treat.

Jar re-sealer

Post by gerryd » Mon May 19, 2014 11:18 pm

seen chris video tonight,

Kinda curious, looks an awesome idea.

but on youtube someone said, once the Jar is open it no longer is sterile?

I would still think this method would lengthen the life of the jar product,

your view?

I would doubt the factory where the jar is first sealed would be a totally sterile environment, so I reckon resealing them yourself is pretty safe.

A faff if you ask me - add some extra oil to cover the surface of the paste, this will help to preserve it.
